Pet Types + Bulk Pet Type Migration Tool

Organize Pet Types More Efficiently in Time To Pet

Updated yesterday

We’re excited to introduce Pet Types, a tool designed to help you better organize and manage the pets in your care. Whether you offer services for dogs, cats, birds, horses, or more unique critters like turtles or ferrets, Pet Types gives you the flexibility to keep things tidy and accurate in your Time To Pet account.

🔎 Note: Pet Types is currently available to Early Access Program participants and will be rolling out to all customers soon!

🐶 What Are Pet Types?

Pet Types are a new field available for every pet profile in your account. Instead of entering each pet's type manually, you can now choose from a dropdown list of options — making your data more consistent and easier to manage.

By default, every Time To Pet account includes:

  • Dog

  • Cat

  • Other (This opens a free-text field for custom entries like "Turtle", "Ferret", etc.)

✏️ How to Customize Pet Types

You can fully customize which Pet Types are available in your dropdown list:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Client Settings > Pet Fields.

  2. Click Edit next to the “Pet Type” field.

  3. Add new Pet Types (e.g., “Horse”, “Bird”, “Rabbit”).

  4. Drag and drop to reorder your list.

  5. Click Save — and you’re done!

Any new pet profiles created after this will have the updated options available.

🐢 What Happens With Existing Pets?

For pets created before Pet Types launched (especially if they had a custom type like "Turtle" or "Birdie"), you'll see those types listed as "Other" + a text entry.

To update them:

  • Go to the pet’s profile and select the correct Pet Type from your new dropdown.

  • Or, use the Bulk Pet Type Migration Tool to update many pets at once! (More on this below.)

🔁 Bulk Pet Type Migration Tool

To make transitioning easier, we’ve added a powerful tool to help update pets in bulk:

  1. Go to Settings > Client Settings > Pet Fields.

  2. Click Edit on Pet Type to open the edit window for the field. Here, you can click the link on the included tooltip to access the Bulk Pet Type Migration tool. You can also access it directly in Settings > Advanced > Bulk Pet Type Migration.

  3. You’ll see a list of custom “other” types that don’t match a dropdown item.

  4. From there, you can:

    • Create a new standard Pet Type (e.g., “Bird”)

    • Select all entries that match (e.g., “bird”, “Birdie”, etc.)

    • Migrate them to the new standard Pet Type with one click

This is especially helpful for businesses with hundreds of pet records using different variations of the same type.

🚨 Note: This action is not reversible.

💡 Best Practices

  • We recommend standardizing your pet types to reduce duplicates and improve reporting or filtering.

  • Use the "Other" option sparingly — it’s there for edge cases, but standard types will make your account cleaner and easier to manage long-term.

✅ Why This Feature Matters

  • Improves data consistency

  • Reduces duplicate pet types (like “Bird”, “birdie”, “bird🐦”)

  • Makes bulk updates faster

  • Helps teams get a clearer view of pet types for service configuration, reporting, and more.
